Cinema, if used effectively, can give useful insight into life. Documentary cinema is one such medium which depicts life as is. A National Short and Documentary Film Festival to be organised by the Karimnagar Film Society from February 19 to 22 intends to bring such documentary filmmakers together and showcase their work.
Of the 46 films, some have already made their mark at various festivals. K.R.. Manoj’s documentary 16mm — Memories, Movement and a Machine has already won the Monatage Movie Award 2008, it was selected for the Osian’s 10th Cinefan festival of Asian and Arab Cinema earlier in 2008 and was also part of the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India 2008 in Goa. Another movie that has won accolades is Beyond The Horizon by Naresh Chander Lal from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. “I wanted to depict the rich and tolerant culture of the islands that are my home,” Lal said.
However, the ride is not all that easy for the documentary filmmakers. their problems are finances and limited viewership. Although, to woo the audience, Lal chose to use Sanjay Swaraj, a well known face in the movie industry for his documentary, not everyone is of the same opinion. Artist Jatin Das, father of actor Nandita Das, whose film forum has an archive of short and documentary films, says, he refuses to engage a Bollywood ‘star’ to endorse his work. He says a work should speak for itself; the movie should engage the audience not the star.
According to Das, the absence of audience for documentary movies is a ‘cultural’ problem, it has a lot to do with how one has been raised. “It has to be inculcated in one’s habit, just like reading books,” he said, adding, short films were earlier shown in cinema halls during the breaks or before a movie. But these have been replaced by commercials now.
Documentary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan echoes Das and says that even the national and regional channels do not show documentaries, and do not explore the immense potential of these movies to educate people. Gopalakrishnan is of the view that the movies need support of the multiplexes’ owners where these movies can be screened and showed.
On asking why movies made by foreigners on Indian themes make it to the Oscars but the same movies made by Indians fail to make a mark, he said, “Oscars should not be considered international awards, they are awards of and for the American movies, controlled by movie producers in the US. They do not follow any fair means to adjudge films.”
He said the only way the Academy Awards try to compensate is by introducing a category for films in foreign languages.

About FILM TELANGANA 2009 & its Purpose:

Filmmaking has relatively been a less chartered territory among common folks, but with the advancements in Digital Film making Technology and its affordability, now anyone can roll out a short film relatively with little effort in the digital world. With its ability to reach out to a relatively larger audience base, we at Discover Telangana Inc, have been dwelling on the idea of putting together a competition for Telangana short films called "Film Telangana 2009" (FT9), to bring out more audio visual content about Telangana and introduce new talent.

New film makers need to be groomed so that we'll have quality visual treat. Events such as these can motivate the younger generations to learn more about Telangana in a better manner and cover far-fetched topics that have never been covered before. Our belief is that, such films don't just create an impact on people from Telangana but people from all walks, given the right exposure to the deserving films and film makers.

There is no better evidence than demonstration of the splendor of beautiful culture, traditions and the people of Telangana. Currently there is a need for visual representation of the struggles and miseries being faced and a portrait of Telangana that has been ethically fraught with numerous other grave problems. All these can be incorporated into a single media event, in no better way than a short film contest, as we strongly feel that it allows you to see the world through the creative eyes.

What would evolve from such an event?

The art of film making is a cumulative learning process and requires considerable amount of collaboration in gathering credible details. Thus we hope the result of FILM TELANGANA 2009 will educate amateur filmmakers like never before about varied facets of Telangana, its culture and the issues.

Any novice participant interested in this contest would not only be educating himself on various unknown facts on Telangana but will also be indirectly aiding in enlightening others through his/her film. Apart from that, of course we are very hopeful that 'Film Telangana 2009' will act as a catalyst in launching an exciting and productive film career for all the budding filmmakers out there, especially in Telangana.

There will be two different categories for the participants,

1. Short films Under 5 minutes (Minimum 1 minute, Maximum 5 minutes)

Formats & Submission:

· Only Digital short films will be accepted in .AVI .MPEG .WMI .MOV formats, which will be uploaded on our website ( http://filmtelangana.com ).

2 copies of the short film have to be submitted as DVDs / CDs
Along with a minimum of half page summary about the movie & credits
Accompanied with stills from the movie & film maker in .JPG format.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1) Festival consists of two sections one competitive section for the INDIA ROLLER AWARDS and the second one is the non-competitive festival of 3RD NATIONAL SHORT AND DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL

2) In the competitive section two INDIA ROLLER AWARDS for the short and documentary films separately. Winners will be presented Rs.10, 000=00(Rupees ten thousand), Shawl, Memento and a citation as first prize and Rs5000=00 (Rupees five thousand) Shawl, Memento and a citation as second prize for the two categories separately.

3) ENTRY FEE FOR COMPETITION: Please send Rs.200/ each category towards an entry Fee for the competition through a crossed Demand Draft in favor of “KARIMNAGAR FILM SOCIETY’ payable at Karimnagar.

4) NO ENTRY FEE FOR FESTIVAL SCREENINGS

5) There will be pre-selection for all categories.

6) To register your film in any section, fill the ENTRY FORM by computer or hand. Post it, signed, to us with two DVD copies of your film, with a synopsis, a quality still from the film and a photo of the Director. Make sure the film title, your name, e-mail and contact numbers are written on the Disc. If you haven't signed the entry form we will not accept your film, for issues concerning copyright and public exhibition, a soft copy is preferred for the data and photos etc.

7) Film still must be either prints of at least 15cm x 10cm or scanned images of 300dpi in JPEG or TIFF format on CD; the purpose is to publish in the Festival Book.

8) Films of all languages should have English subtitles.

9) The festival retains the right to keep copies of films entered, for future non-commercial screenings

Call For Entries: Final Deadline Approaching

The Third annual NATIONAL SHORT AND DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL 2009 ORGANISED BY KARIMNAGAR FILM SOCIETY (AFFILIATED TO FEDERATION OF FILM SOCITIES OF INDIA) seeks documentaries, short films of any length and format for our 2009 festival taking place February 14-19 at KARIMNAGAR, ANDHRA PRADESH.

Festival consists of two sections one competitive section for the INDIA ROLLER AWARDS and the second one is the non-competitive festival of 3^RD NATIONAL SHORT AND DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL 2009

50 years of film society movement to be celebrated

Celebrations to begin in Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore
Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI), the umbrella organization of Indian film societies started on December 13, 1959 as Satyajit Ray its president and ex Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as its vice president, is all set to celebrate its golden jubilee, announced the FFSI general secretary Sudhir Nandgaonkar in a press release issued in Mumbai.

Special events will be held at Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune and Bangalore, where veteran film society activists will be honored and challenges before film societies in the wake of “world cinema” television channels and DVDs will be discussed.

FFSI will hold a three day event in Kolkata starting December 30, where stalwarts of film society movement will be felicitated. West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will inaugurate the celebrations and honour renowned critic Chidanand Dasgupta, who founded the FFSI along with Satyajit Ray, Vijaya Mule and Mrinal Sen. A seminar, will also be hosted during the celebrations where new challenges before film societies will be discussed.

It is lot more than a mere coincidence that “world cinema” is witnessing an unprecedented interest from television channels, DVD labels and theatres, in the 50th year of federation. FFSI through its more than 300 affiliate film societies across the country has been screening films from all over the world contributing considerably in spreading film culture. Societies have been organizing film appreciation workshops, retrospectives, bringing out journals on cinema and publishing books on Indian as well as international films and filmmakers.

Western region of FFSI will hold a day long seminar in the premises of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Pune on January 18, 2009. Seminar will be presided over by FFSI president and renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal where the emerging challenges before film societies will be discussed.

Noted filmmaker and film society activist Basu Chatterjee, founder-director of the NFAI PK Nair and film professor Satish Bahadur will be felicitated during the seminar.

FFSI, Keralam will hold special events starting January 15 in the presence of FFSI general secretary Sudhir Nandgaonkar. While celebration will start in Bangalore from January 20.

FFSI chairman Shyam Benegal had officially announced the golden jubilee celebrations on the sidelines of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last month at Open Forum, an event held by FFSI.

The central office of FFSI is also bringing out a book on the 50-year history of film society Movement and producing a 30-minute digital film on the Film Society Movement in India. An international seminar will also be held in August 2009, where international federation of film society’s president Poulo Minito will deliver keynote address.

FFSI will also chalk out year long celebration plans. Special festivals, film appreciation workshops and seminars will be held across the country throughout the year.

FOCUS ON CHILDREN’S FILMS IN INDIA

For sometime, After it took root in Indian soil the film production activity remained relevant to the society. Themes for filmmaking were borrowed from mythology, folklore and contemporary society, the process of commercialization commenced eventually. Being relevant to the contemporary society and being responsible to the society were relegated to the background and unrealistic themes became their staple diet. Though majority if filmmakers toed this line and helped covert the filmmaking into a money spinning industry, there remained a few who were committed to the social obligations and fought valiantly to use cinema medium for the benefit of the largest number of people. They continued to utilize the medium as an instrument to usher in social change they films themes such as untouchables, dowry, illiteracy, superstitions and similar social evils, which are eating into the vital of society. Similarly there were some who made films for children. Some of those films had children in important roles, whole some others were meant for children. They made films with a spirit of dedication not withstanding the lukewarm support from government. Many of those films caught the imagination of children and adults alike. ‘Boot Polish’ and’ Jagte Raho’ were some such successful films.Films meant for children were made both in Hindi and other Indian languages. Indian filmmakers of this genre were influenced by the trends in socialist countries especially soviet union.‘Parivartan’ a Bengali film directed by satyen bose is considered the first ever children’s film produced in India. It was also remade in Hindi as ‘Jagruti’. The film depicts the schooling of children and its influence on them.The film also portrays the various experiences children undergo during the ten year long schooling though at times the child characters In the film express opinions, which are inappropriate to there are age, at that time it was considered a good children’s film. Satyen Bose himself played the teachers role later satyen bose made a hilarious comedy ‘Chalti ka nam gadi’ with ganguly brothers(ashok kumar, anup kumar and kishore kumar)dosti is his another important film in with he highlighted the selfless love and affection between two physically handicapped youngsters. Satyen bose was regarded as director of children, since he understood their moods and reactions. He believed that one should not male children act but allow them to respond and react to situations while filming ."Good children’s, films shall be made when we allow children themselves to write and direct them" said satyen bose.Raj kapoor who was regarded numbershe greatest showman of romantic films and dream merchant excellence made ‘boot polish in 1954. he produced ‘boot polish’ with prakash arora, a prithvi theatre man as its director the film emphasizes honesty, hard work and education for all, as the basic requirements for progress ans the role of youngsters in the reconstruction of the nation. Raj kapoor who admired Nehru’s philosophy and who was influenced by Soviet Union made this film this film with emotional involvement. The film depicts the life of two children who live in a Bombay slum. The deprivations the children undergo and their inner strength and human relationships form the basis of the film. Jhon chacha who supports them and his influence on them provided the film with emotional characteristics it essentially remained remained a children’s film ‘boot polish’ to a large extent documented the intellectual and social atmosphere the country during the first decade of independence.Tapan sinha who dealt with human values relationships very sensitively in all his films also made similar films for children. According to tapan sinha the development of Indian children is lopsided because education is not accessible to many, and hence children’s films ought to take up social issues and explain and analyse them in manner comprehensible to children. All hos children’s films reflect his ideology. In his ‘Kabuli Wala’(1950)’tapan sinha succeeded in translating randranath tagore’s original ideas on to the celluloid in visual terms. The actiovies of an intelligence officer and his young assistant (a nephew) while tracking and sustaining interest throughout. The Andaman islands as the location was an added attraction to the children. Both ‘safed hathi’ and ‘dweep ka rahasya’ were produced by tapan sinha for children’s film society.In 1987 Tapan Sinha made ‘Aaj ka Robinhood’ a fictional adventure which takes the children away from their surroundings and helps them unleash their imagination. But the film was criticised for raising certain issues like dwindling forest resources and environmental degradation which are beyond the purview of children.Kedar Sharma is another filmmaker who made significant contributions to the children’s films. He directed more than 25 films. In fact, he directed the first ever film ‘jal deep’ launched by children’s film society.The film revolves around a lighthouse and attempts to impress the children about being courageous and united. It was an entertaining film with subtle humour. It was screened at the Venice international film festival and award. It was unfortunate that such a noteworthy film was allowed to languish In the storerooms of children’s film society for years, thus not reaching the children for whom it was meant. Among the children’s films directed by kedar sharma ‘scout camp’ (1958) ,Meera ka Chirta (1961) Khudahafiz (1983)were praise worthy.Zul vellani made Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Post Office’ into a film in (1965). The film unveils the dream world of a boy who of his room and dreams and imagines the film visualized all assisted all time greats like Mehboob and Shantharam executed his film in a superb fashion.The romantic and poet of Hindi film world Gulzar also endowed several children’s films guzlar never claimed that he made those films for children alone. Bout his films stand as examples of spontaneous depictions of child behavior. In his Kitaab Gulzar was at his best the film sparkles with Gulzar extrapolations to the original story of Samaresh Basu he brings out on to the screen what goes on in a child’s mind. both the children who played the main roles in Kitaab behave like normal children of their age. Got bored with the restrictions of school they try to breakout of it. In the process they imitate their teachers, form gangs sing ans mimic film songs and jingles all these were captured in Kitaab in a sensitive and appealing manner though critics found fault with Gulzar for inciting the children against their parents, it was appreciated by many the Indian film industry is known for its unexpected happenings and uncertainties. Everyone expected Gulzar’s kitaab to succeed because he has invested all his creativity in it but it failed to achieve commercial success. But unexpectedly Parichay, which was a remake of a very successful English film ‘sound of music’, became a runaway hit.Satyajit ray set a new trend in children film with his ‘goopi gaine baga baine’ and ‘Heerak rajer desh’. Sandeep ray followed his father in this new trail and mode ‘Goopi baga phire elo’ continuing the story line of the earlier two films.Armed with the magical powers bestoed on them by the ghost goopy and baga continue to rule shundi and halla kingdoms. They keep worrying about their lost childhood. Meanwhile they receive an invitation fom the king of Anadpur. On their way to Anandpur, Goopi and baga have a chance meeting with the wily Brahmhananda Achrya who has achieved mysterious powers from a‘mantrik‘acharya promises goopi and baga that he will bestow them with their lost youth provided both of them help him in procuring three valuable diamonds through 12 years old Bikram. In Aandpur all boys with the name Bikram disappear mysteriously one by one. But goopi and baga notice a boy boy and all those parents who lost their sons recently go to meet acharya. Finally goopi and baga rescue all the missing boys from the custody of acharya the entire film is replete worth mumbo jumbo and magic and hence enjoyable to children.Sandeep ray made ‘Fatik chand’ in 1984. it depicts the relationship between fatik and madari. Sandeep Ray who believed in making entertaining children’s films, continues to make films and is actively involved in organization of film festivals.The well known new cinema filmmaker Aravindan also made a children film called ‘kummatti’ for the children of a remote village in eastern kerala Kummatti is a magician a mantrik and a singer one day ‘kummatti hypnotize the children to leave the school and takes them to the outskirts of the village. in there he plays with them for sometime, transforming all the children into various animals. Before leaving he once again restores the children into their original forms. One of the boys is left out of this restoration and remains a dog. Villagers try all kinds of spells to restore the boy’s form but fail. Noticing his mistake kummatti comes back to the village and transforms the dog into a boy. On reaching home the boy releases his pet dove from its cage. The film conveys a subtle message to allow the children to be free and without restrictions so that they can soar high and widen their horizons.In 1960 Rajendra sharma made ‘Dilli ka kahani’ fo CFSI.The film unveils the history of Delhi.The film was awarded a certificate of merit. Phani majundar directed ‘savitri’ in 1961 which was also awarded merit certificate. ‘Raju aur Gangaram’ directed by Ezra Mir was released in 1962. Ezra Mir was a well-knows children’s filmmaker who worked in films division and children’s film society of India. Ezra Mir was a recipient of padmasree. ‘Raju aur Gangaram’ was a film about a boy and his friendship with a talking parrot. the parrot who clams that its name is Gangaram, takes shelter in raju’s home on a rainy day. Thus beings an abiding friendship between the boy the parrot. The Film shows how fast and easily children develop affinity towards birds and animal. The film was awarded a merit certificate in 1962. Santi. p.choudhury’s ‘Heerar prajapati’ was adjudged as the best film and was awarded prime minister’ Gold Medal in 1968. In 1990 parvati menon made ‘Triyatri’, Ravi, Adi and surya fail to score sufficient markes in their school leaving examination to get adminission in college. Depressed, all three of them commence a cycke yatra from jaisalmer to kanyakumari .the yatra enhances their awarenences and helps them learn so much ‘triyatri’ was an inspiring film for children.In the same year Pankaj Parashar made Asman se Gira a fantasy film which became a success. A prince fed up with studying meets an alien youth from another planet together they spend sometime happily then the alien feels homesick and expresses his desire to go back the prince makes several efforts to send him back and finally he succeeds in sending the alien to his planet.The contributions of Sivan and Santosh the father & son team to children films are significant and praiseworthy Sivan in his film Abhayam brought in to focus the anxieties and their future which renders the children into memorizing machines Sivan also highlights the children lost in the wilderness of village on the India Pakistan border in Kutch region. The village lacks even basic amenities like drinking water. Surrounded by marshy soil and the border at a distance the silence of the village gets broken by the Mig planes, which frequently fly over the village. The film strings together the imagery that comes out of the imagination of a boy who lives in the village. The confrontation that takes places between the reality and the romantic world of this little boy forms the content of the films.Santosh sivan who is an accomplished cinematographer made ‘Halo’ and ‘Malli’ following the trend initiated by his father ‘Halo’ is a film about a little girl Sasa who goes in search of her lost puppy called Halo in the city of Bombay. Her friend Anil, a nun, a journalist and unit boy in a video team help her in the search. The group comes across while searching a smuggler of dogs, a police commissioner and editor. By the time the film comes to a close the entire city of Bombay gets into chaos. The film essentially puts the psychological state of young children who live in big cities under the spotlight.Santosh sivan chose a larger canvas for his film ‘Malli" it is a beautiful poem on celluloid shot in a forest. The film conveys a subtle message on the conservation of excitement.A.K. Bir one of our most talented cinematographers, made a film ‘Lavanya Preeti’ in which he portrayed the friendship between three children. A new world opens up before Vidyullata when she makes friends with her class fellow’s Go pal and Mayadhar. Gopal steals a golden ring from his house in order to protect a priest from getting insulted. The priest is saved from ignominy but gopal family faces a problem, which threatens the natural and spontaneous way children respond to various situations.In 1998 A.K Bir made another film ‘Nandan’ depicting the mischievousness and daring of an adolescent. The film very effectively portrays the rebelliousness and aggressiveness, which is a characteristic feature of adolescents.‘Mujuhse Dosti Karogi’ a film made by Gopi Desai received critical appreciation. Malgudi is an imaginary town created by R.K. Narayana and all his novels are set in this place. Shanker Nag succeeded in transferring the liveliness, spontaneity and the authenticity of the original writing on to the film. The escapades of swami sparkle with mirth and humour. Most of it comes from the way children look and perceive the world. The changing perceptions of children present a kaleidoscopic vision as they grow up. Children love to see themselves in swami and shankar nag successfully made the film which compels both children and adults to watch.Prema karanth who made a name for herself with ‘Phaniyamma’ also made a children’s film ‘Nakkala Rajakumari’ she attempted to look at the concept of democracy from children’s point of view in the film. Well-known filmmaker and once chairperson of children’s film society of India Sai Paranjpye made several impressive films like ‘Jaadoo ka Shankh’ and ‘Sikandar’Famous Malayalam writer and filmmakers M.T. Vasudevan Nair made a film ‘Kadavu’ based on S.K.Pottekkat’s story. It presents the worldview of a child. ‘Kadavu ‘ made in 1991 was screened at the international film festival 1992.Mani rathnam’s ‘Anjali’ is yet another film which broke new ground in films about children. It depicts the agonies of a family with a mentally retarded child. The film dealt with the interrelationships with in the family members and how they respond and react to the mentally retarded in authentic and sensitive manner.Madan bavvaria’s ‘Ankur Maina our Khaboothar’ depict the children in relation to an endangered species of birds. Dr Bhagiratha prasad makes efforts to protect the pink dove species which is on the verge of extinction. When he leaves for Mauritius on his mission, his grandson Ankur accompanies him. Ankur makes friends with maina in Mauritius and both of them develop a relationship with the dove. The film received appreciation wherever it was screened.Veerendra Sayani’s ‘Kadhi pass Kabhi fail ‘ is considered one of the very good children’s films produced in the recent times.Robin, a village boy is prodigy of numbers and mathematics. The entire village is impressed by his facility with numbers. A couple, uncle joe and aunt sheela approach robin’s parents and promise them that they will arrange for his higher education. They take him along with them to the city. Instead of admitting him in school they try to exploit his prowess with numbers to make money by exhibiting it at various places. Robin is frustrated because he could not pursue his higher studies and feels depressed. All of a sudden he loses his ability to manipulate numbers. Feeling dejected and insulted Robin runs away from the city and reaches his village with the help of his pet dog. Soon after he arrives his village he regains his computing ability. Sri T. Prakash Rao was the director of the film. The film won state award in1980.Bapu’s ‘BalarajuKatha ’, Adurthi Subbarao’s ‘Sudigundalu’ and ‘Maroprapancham’ , Akkineni Kutumba Rao’s ‘Bhadram koduko’, ‘Patha Nagaram lo Pasivadu’, ‘Gulabilu’, B.narsingaRao’s ‘Harivillu’ and some other films are made in Telugu language.Though several films are made in India to promote all-round development of children by individuals and under the auspices of Children’s Film Society of India, yet a lot remains to be achieved there is lot of room for improvement both in terms of quality and quantity. An efficient and professional distribution system and enhanced number of venues for the exhibition are also needed.
